Best time to go to Thailand: Everyday Life Inward A Modest Italian Town

After almost 2 weeks inward the hustle too bustle of some of Europe's most visited cities, nosotros enjoyed our lastly calendar week inward Italia amongst to a greater extent than or less downtime inward Maniago, the town my sis Pam currently calls home.

Maniago, located inward northeastern Italy, is nestled inward betwixt vineyards too the mighty Dolomite mount range.

It's a sleepy niggling town, amongst a population of almost 11,000 residents.

We arrived inward the dark, thence upon awakening, I threw opened upwardly the shutters too the sentiment was just so....European. My hopes exactly!

Speaking of shutters, pretty much every Italian habitation had these amazing shutters. The windows opened upwardly all the way, too the shutters are on the outside, when they were closed it was DARK! Why don't nosotros have got these inward every habitation inward the U.S., specially inward Alaska for the never-ending summertime sun!?

Pam's habitation was cute, fifty-fifty amongst the modest too somewhat strange European layout. There were squeamish large windows inward every room that allow inward thence much light,

too beautiful Italian tile flooring throughout.

The bath doubled every bit the laundry room, but non much laundry gets done there, every bit the dryer takes four hours to dry out 1 load, too and then y'all must empty out a large bin of water. Needless to say, Pam has resigned herself to a weekly see to the laundromat. Ewww.

And tin nosotros utter kitchens for a moment? THIS was the kitchen upon move-in. Don't ever complain almost your counter infinite again! Luckily, renovation plans were already underway.

Ahhh, much better. And they fifty-fifty have got a dishwasher, a luxury for sure! (But at that topographic point is no garbage disposal. Food scraps must live collected too disposed of inward the proper dumpster outside, too all nutrient containers must be washed too recycled appropriately.)

Just a brusque walk from the house, y'all tin fill upwardly up bottles of raw milk from this niggling cow-print shack, for cheap.

And also a H2O shack- regular or sparkling. Italians LOVE their sparkling water. I wasn't much of a fan, I'm afraid.

And every Friday, the fish truck rolls into town.

So convenient!

But beware, stores inward this sleepy town unopen every 24-hour interval from almost 1 o'clock to four, for riposo, or the Italian version of siesta. Business owners larn habitation for a large tiffin too a nap, which sounds squeamish inward theory until y'all demand to larn your shopping done!

As exotic every bit all of this sounds, too sometimes is, I know from sense that on to a greater extent than or less days, y'all would give anything to walk the hallowed aisles of Target!

Every modest town inward Italia has a town square, too a church- or several! And 1 of my favorite customs? Sitting inward the town square, sipping coffee.

Or tea, for me. (Yes, I was won over yesteryear week's end. More on that later.) But, isn't this a delightful tea service?

While nosotros sipped,  the kids entertained themselves on bikes.

Time to motion on, but first, how almost to a greater extent than or less tantalizing Italian pastries- to go. Why conduct just one?

Good idea!

The church building was just a brusque walk from the town square,

too it was beautiful inside, every bit well.

Several times a 24-hour interval the church building bells chimed. Think of the scene inward The Sound of Music where Maria marries the Captain, too the bells are singing amongst approval. I don't mean value I would ever tire of that sound, also, on the hr was a unproblematic chime notifying the time.

The following commons was the perfect identify for the kids to run too play, on a gorgeous autumn day.

Now, on to the market....

The olive crude alternative was extensive,

every bit was the Nutella/hazelnut/chocolate spread section.

I'm withal dreaming of the fresh hunks of parmigiano-reggiano,

too the girls were amazed that the eggs were non refrigerated.

After collecting our ingredients, it was fourth dimension for our ain Italian-style tiffin consisting of; salami, prosciutto, parmigiano-reggiano, breadsticks too a thick, sugariness balsamic reduction sauce. Delicious!

(***By the way, inward Italy, bread-y breadstuff sticks (think Olive Garden) are non common, it's to a greater extent than a cracker-like stick. There are a meg varieties, too I loved them!)

Dear Pistachio cream- Where have got y'all been all my life? This cream was the consistency of peanut butter, but made from soil pistachios, too is the materials amongst which dreams are made. Move over Nutella!

One of my favorite stops inward town was to Mario's pizza place. Could it have got a to a greater extent than perfect name?

Not certain if this was Mario, too he didn't await also thrilled to have got his motion-picture demo taken, but he did brand an awesome pizza!

Pizza too presecco. Don't heed if I do. This was, hands down, the best pizza of the entire trip. Thin crust, wood-fired to crisp perfection amongst just the correct amount of toppings. Italian pizza is a simpler version of it's American counterpart, too I savored every bite.

So did the kids! (Pizza seldom comes sliced inward Italy, y'all cutting your own, which definitely helped irksome me downwards a bit!)

Maniago also has to a greater extent than or less ruins, every bit whatever practiced Italian town would have.

Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 castle, which was originally built sometime inward the 11th century. I withal can't larn over the historic menstruum onetime history inward Europe.

The hike upwardly to the ruins was lovely.

And lots of interesting things were found.

But when nosotros saw to a greater extent than or less rats it was fourth dimension to hike down- FAST!

We paused long plenty from our rat-induced frenzy, to accept inward the views.

Idyllic for sure.

Pam too I fifty-fifty had the chance to larn away without the kids on a few dissimilar days, but firstly coffee. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 large grouping of Italian bikers took a pit halt at the café spell nosotros were there. I absolutely dearest when something is just how y'all pictured it would be. They were loud, expressive too talked amongst their hands, too I enjoyed every infinitesimal of the spectacle.

And yes, I finally left my tea behind too ordered coffee. I have got e'er liked the flavour of java fine, it's just never been something I needed. But the latte macchiato was a dissimilar story entirely. It was smooth, warm, creamy too dreamy. What took me thence long?!?

Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 gorgeous crusade to the nearby town of Aquileia, was following on the agenda.

The basilica was completed inward the twelvemonth 1033, which is just mind-boggling, but thence mutual identify inward Europe.

The church building has since been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site, too is no longer used for religious services.

The mosaic floors were only incredible!

The basement of the basilica is nether ongoing excavation, amongst findings dating fifty-fifty before than the 11th century.

The church building was amazing, but the best business office of the day? Sitting on a sun-drenched patio, savoring a latte macchiato (yes, to a greater extent than or less other one!), too having uninterrupted sister-time. Just what my individual needed.

Another day, to a greater extent than or less other latte at the town square. I caved too allow Ella effort a decaf version (this nipper has had a rattling adult palette since birth, fifty-fifty lapping upwardly spicy shrimp at 18 months), when inward Rome, right?

Eva ordered the hot chocolate, which was thick, creamy too to a greater extent than similar pudding.

Portobuffolè was the excursion of the day, for a 1 time monthly antique market.

We actually loved browsing all of the diverse treasures,

too saw lots of relics from Europe's colorful past.

Another absolutely charming town!

Pam constitute to a greater extent than or less peachy keepsakes, every bit well.

After shopping, a quick trip to Aviano Air Base was inward order.

No see to a base of operations would live consummate without a halt at the BX (base exchange), which is basically similar the pitiful orphaned cousin of Target. Why nosotros withal have got these inward USA is beyond me, but they are lifesavers when living overseas.

But quite perhaps my favorite activeness of the week? Driving the winding province roads too gazing at miles upon miles of vineyards, interrupted every thence oft yesteryear a picturesque, quaint village. Yes, it was every bit dreamy every bit it sounds!

The vines were fifty-fifty kickoff to plough the vibrant autumn colors of ruddy too orange.

Each percentage of Italia specializes inward a dissimilar diversity of wine, every bit dictated yesteryear soil too climate. Northeastern Italia is the prosecco region.

We were thence fortunate to live able to meet to a greater extent than or less other side of Italy, away from the throngs of tourists.

With our amazing calendar week coming to an end, nosotros had to savour our lastly day. We had our lastly latte macchiato,

our lastly see to the town foursquare too the stately basilica,

our lastly pizza at Mario's,

too said goodbye to the lovely server at our favorite cafe inward the square. She knew no English linguistic communication (as is mutual inward a modest town) but e'er greeted us amongst a friendly smile, which was non e'er the illustration inward the larger cities.

But the most hard goodbye? Leaving our sugariness menage unit of measurement on the develop platform, every bit nosotros began our journeying home.

And thence our gamble comes to an end, amongst thence many memories to cherish. We loved every 2d too can't hold back to provide someday.

(**Side note- If y'all companionship java inward the Venice airport, y'all stand upwardly at the counter too potable up. To-go cups are rattling rare. So, for a civilisation that loves la dolce vita I can't sympathise why the java isn't savored too enjoyed? And, the java loving cup is tiny at that!)

Off nosotros go! The girls were quite thrilled to larn a chocolate croissant on Air France, every bit opposed to a purse of peanuts!

And after a brief halt inward Paris (yes, I was totally hoping for a flying cancellation), nosotros were on our way.

From Venice, to Paris, to Los Angeles, to Seattle too finally dorsum to Anchorage. Safe too sound, where Matt picked us upwardly at the aerodrome at 2 inward the morning.

Whew, xxx hours of go across several fourth dimension zones is a roughshod matter to create to your body.

Was it worth it? Yes....a one thousand times YES!!
